2012 – Islamist Seizure of Gao, Mali
On June 27, 2012, Islamist militias aligned with Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) seized control of the northern Malian city of Gao. They clashed with separatist MNLA forces and drove them out of the region.
At least 20 civilians were killed. Dozens more were injured. The black flag of jihad was raised over administrative buildings as Sharia law was imposed.
2020 – Battle of Mocímboa da Praia, Mozambique
On June 27, 2020, jihadists from the Islamic State’s Central Africa Province launched a coordinated assault on Mocímboa da Praia, a strategic port town in Cabo Delgado Province. The attack lasted three days.
Civilians were executed, homes were torched, and entire neighborhoods were emptied. Government forces and private contractors eventually retook the city, but only after significant casualties.
